The Heights of Courage: Brig. General (ret.) Avigdor Kahalani
When the Yom Kippur war broke out in Oct 1973, over 1400 Syrian tanks poured into the Israeli-held Golan Heights. Opposing them were just Israeli tanks led by then Lieutenant Avigdor Kahalani. At first, the Syrian seemed poised to push into the Jordan Valley. Over several of intensive fighting and suffering horrendous casualties, the Israelis managed to hold off the Syrian attack and pushed them out of the Golan. For his bravery in leading his men in battle and saving the Golan, Avigdor, now Brigadier General, was awarded the highest military medal that Israel can bestow, Itur Ha’Gvura (עיטור הגבורה), the medal of Valor.
