NYC: SWFS – Pnina Agenyahu & Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew

March 19, 2017 @ 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Learn about the struggles and triumphs of Ethiopian Jewish immigrants to Israel through an exciting documentary, followed by a discussion with Ethiopian Israeli activist Pnina Agenyahu.

This film screening and talk is free but please RSVP.

Viewers of Netflix’s Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front will recognize Mekonen Abebe, then a new recruit to the IDF Parachute regiment. Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew is a documentary that elaborates on his incredible story, as he matures from a frightened shepherd dealing with the loss of his father to an impoverished immigrant struggling to adapt to Israeli society, before flourishing as an IDF officer.

Pnina Agenyahu was born in Ethiopia before immigrating to Israel at age 3. She was named one of Haaretz’s most influential Israeli women for her advocacy work with Hillel and as a public representative on Israel’s Council for Higher Education. She currently lives in Washington D.C. while serving as Senior Shlicha for Israel Engagement for the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
